Obituary for Colin R. Rohm

Colin Ross Rohm, age 26, of Madison, WI died Tuesday November 21, 2017 at University Hospital in Madison, WI from bacterial pneumonia and complications of Type 1 diabetes.
Colin was born on July 22, 1991, in Stevens Point, WI, to Dale and Christina Rohm. He lived and was raised in Stevens Point throughout his childhood and early adulthood, until leaving for university.
Colin was always grateful for his many dedicated and inspirational teachers at the Gesell Institute, Jackson Elementary School, P.J. Jacobs Junior High, SPASH, and UWSP as a Youth-Options student. He was a valedictorian of the SPASH graduating class in 2009.
Always musically talented, Colin particularly enjoyed his opportunities to participate in the Stevens Point Schools Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra programs, SPAMTA-piano, the Central State Chamber Orchestra, and the Stevens Point City Band. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he sang in choirs, participated in bell choir, and played double-bass and other instruments for special events.
Colin was a Wisconsin All-State and National Merit Scholar. He attended UW-Madison on a four-year Music Clinic scholarship, where he played double-bass in the UW-Symphony. He received his B.A. in 2013 with triple majors in Mathematics, Economics, and History. While an undergraduate student, he worked as a peer advisor in the UW Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS), which was the genesis of his future vocation as an academic advisor in various departments on campus.
At the time of his death, Colin was advising in the CCAS, teaching a freshman seminar on the research university and the Wisconsin Experience, and pursuing graduate studies in educational public policy at the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Colin loved living and working in Madison as a member of the academic community. He especially savored summers, when he advised in-coming freshmen students at Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR). He was a regular visitor of the Madison Farmer’s Market, the Terrace of the UW Memorial Union, and was often seen lugging a backpack of books to various Madison coffee shops.
Colin was nourished by annual times for solitary retreat and reflection at the family cottage in Leith, Ontario. He was an avid reader of academic materials, US and Canadian policy, national and international history, science-fiction, vegetarian cooking, and newspaper puzzle pages. Colin was a well-known lover of all-things-dinosaur.
He is survived by his parents Dale and Christina Rohm of Stevens Point, WI; his brother, Garrick (special friend Andrea Middleton) of Madison, WI; his paternal grandparents, Marvin and Elaine Rohm of Rudolph, WI; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth McKeen of Ithaca, NY; and his aunts, uncles and cousins living across the US and Canada. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather William McKeen.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1410 Rogers St. in Stevens Point, WI. Visitation will begin prior to the service at 10:00 in the church narthex. The Rev. Dr. Clay Schmit and Youth and Family Minister Todd Lewis will officiate. Boston Funeral Home www.bostonfuneralhome.net is assisting the family where online condolences may be written.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the University Hospital Trauma and Life Support Center for their excellent and compassionate care. As per his wishes, Colin’s organs were lovingly given to extend the joy of life for others.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a Memorial Donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation http://www.jdrf.org/ , or a charity of your choice.
