Obituary for Roland "Ron" Vallin Sr.

Roland “Ron” Vallin, Sr. Age 90, of Plover, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at North Haven Assisted Living in Stevens Point.

Ron was born on August 17,1928 to the late Raymond & Francis (Ziepke) Vallin in Amherst, WI. He grew up in the area, attended local schools and graduated from P.J Jacobs High School in 1947. He went onto attend UW-Stevens Point for one year. While in school Ron excelled in sports. His passion was playing football. In 1949, he choose to try out for the Cleveland Indians baseball team.

He enlisted into the U.S. Air Force on October 5, 1950 and was stationed in Germany as a Radio operator for 4 years. While serving his country, he received the Occup Medal (Germany), Good Conduct Medal & National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 3, 1954.

Upon his arrival back from service he married Kathryn Claire Pliska on June 23, 1956. They were married for 56 wonderful years.

Ron was a dedicated employee of Consolidated Papers where he worked for 37 years. In his tenure at the Paper Mill, he held various titles and ended his career in 1991 as the Mill’s Machine Superintendent.

In his retirement, Ron enjoyed family oriented events, vacations, reunions and special events with friends. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling and wintering in Florida.

He is survived by five children, Karla (Jeb Wievel) Sandstrom, of Stevens Point, Rollie (Beth) Vallin of Stevens Point, Andy (Sheila) Vallin of Sellersburg, IN, Nancy (Jerome) Ueda, of Reno, NV, and Amy Vallin of Louisville, KY; 10 grandchildren, Adam Sandstrom, Michael (Maddie Eckes) Sandstrom, Michelle (Ryan) Omernik, Alyssa (Tyler) Stephens, Quinton Vallin, Jay and Ian Ueda, Chase, Zackery and Madison Vallin. He is further survived by seven great-grandchildren, Carter and Zoe Sandstrom, Landon, Madison and Jase Omernik, Ashton and Tanner Sandstrom; 3 sisters, Jean Cox, Donna Kemmer, Kathy (Norman) Gumz; 2 brothers, Jim (Lyn) Vallin and Tom (Renee) Vallin, close companion Mary Mae Mitchell and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond & Francis; wife, Kathryn; brother Raymond; and son-in-law, Dan Sandstrom.

A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday November 3, 2018 at Boston Funeral Home with Rev, Steve Hulke presiding. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the Forest Cemetery at a later date.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Portage County Health Care Center, North Haven Assisted Living, and Ministry Hospice for their heartfelt care that was given to Ron.
